Employment 1st Launch

19th Nov 2010

Hospitality sector skills council People 1st has developed a joint initiative with Jobcentre Plus to prepare people looking for their first job in hospitality. Over 1,000 people have piloted "Employment 1st" the 60-hour pre-employment training programme which is now available in colleges throughout the UK. Employment 1st covers 13 job roles - including chef and barista roles - and leads to a nationally-recognised qualification, the Level 1 Award in Introduction to Employment in the Hospitality Industry. Gerry Brown, People 1st's pre-employment manager, said: "As the creation of new jobs in the sector require an additional one million employees up to 2017, businesses need all the help they can get. Employment 1st is something that employers have been crying out for - a programme that provides a standardised approach to pre-employment training across the nation, and produces work-ready individuals with the skills required to undertake entry-level jobs." He stressed that employers can play a key role in ensuring the success of the programme by encouraging their local colleges to support it: "I would encourage employers to get in touch with their local college and make them aware of Employment 1st, if they're not already delivering it," he commented. "The more people who request for it to be delivered, the more colleges will pick it up - increasing the number of skilled applicants for jobs in out industries."
